Launching the Sheffield Trophy
Announcing the launch of the Sheffield Trophy – celebrating the city which gave the world the gift of football.
For a city celebrated and revered for its contribution to the world of industry, it was quietly and modestly that the ‘Steel City’ played a pivotal role in the birth of the most popular sport on the planet – football.
Sheffield was the home of the Beautiful Game’s first-ever competitive tournament in 1867 – the brainchild of the sporting visionary Thomas Youdan , the Yorkshire theatre-owner and entrepreneur who saw the enormous potential of a working-class sport which was hugely popular but which lacked structure and organisation.
Youdan’s firm belief that football would one day attract a world-wide audience was such that he insisted the final of his tournament between Hallam and Norfolk was staged at football’s first-ever professional stadium, Bramall Lane, home of Championship high-fliers Sheffield United.
In recent years some of the world’s finest youth teams have gathered in Sheffield to celebrate and build upon Youdan’s legacy – but now is the time to formally and officially mark the city’s unique place in sporting history.
Through the Sheffield Trophy we will continue to see youth teams from across the globe display their skills in the city where it all began – alongside participants in the fast-growing format of the game, Walking Football.
“ My team has a huge depth of experience in hosting top-class tournaments and we are immensely proud to be putting the great city of Sheffield truly on the map. “
“ I’m sure that those players back in the 1800s had absolutely no idea what they were starting but I feel certain they would be thrilled to know that 152 years on we remember them and we salute them for what it was they achieved. Our aim is very simple – to continue to grow the levels of participation and to promote the wellbeing which comes from embracing the beautiful game . “
Sheffield Trophy Founder and Managing Director Jock Waugh.
The Sheffield Trophy has a range of events from grassroots and schools through to Pro-Academies and is the tournament partner of the Federation of Internal Walking Football Associations (FIWFA). Hosting its UK Pro-event in August, the Sheffield Trophy has its first US Pro-Tournament in Los Angeles in October and is in discussions with Qatar and China about further events next year.
